Trichuris trichiura is a nematode parasite that infects the human intestine. It is also known as the "whipworm" due to its whip-like shape. Heavy infection can cause anemia and a prolapsed rectum.

Life CycleEdit

T. trichiura is transmitted through feces via diagnostic eggs. These eggs survive and develop in the external environment, and enter another host through ingestion. The eggs hatch in the intestine, and larvae imbed themselves into the mucosa to develop into adults. The adults emerge and imbed themselves into the intestinal wall to feed; imbedding around the rectal area causes muscle weakness and prolapse. The adults reproduce sexually and produce eggs to continue the cycle (Correale J and  Farez M. (2007).
